Your Guide to BMW Adaptive LED Headlights
BMW equips its vehicles with several types of lights, including state-of-the-art BMW adaptive LED headlights. These lights are more efficient than conventional lights and come in a variety of designs.
What Are BMW Adaptive LED Headlights?
BMW's adaptive LED headlights are headlights that use diodes to illuminate the road. Adaptive LED headlights are able to adapt to various road conditions. The benefits of adaptive LED headlights include:
- Increased Visibility - Adaptive LED headlights emit more light, giving you increased visibility in low-light situations. They also pivot toward the direction you're driving, making it easier to see around curves and corners.
- Safety - Typically, adaptive LED headlights contain a sensor that detects oncoming traffic. This capability enables the lights to dim so that they don't blind other drivers.
- Less Distracted Driving - Because BMW LED adaptive headlights can automatically adjust to different situations, you don't have to constantly fiddle with your light controls. You can focus on the road instead of your headlight settings.
Fully adaptive LED headlights come standard on the following BMW models:
- G05 X5
- G06 X6
- G07 X7
- G11/G12 7 Series LCI
- G14/G15/G16 8 Series
Types of BMW Adaptive LED Headlights
There are several types of BMW adaptive LED headlights.
Curve-Adaptive Headlights
Curve-adaptive headlights contain sensors that detect curves in the road. They pivot toward the direction of the curve to light the road ahead. They can also change direction when you turn the wheel of your BMW to the left or right. Some curve-adaptive headlights adjust according to how fast your BMW is traveling to project light closer to or further away from the vehicle.
Cornering Lights
Cornering lights, unlike curve-adaptive headlights, are fixed in place and serve as auxiliary lights to the BMW's main headlights. Cornering lights automatically activate when you turn the steering wheel or activate your BMW's turn signal. When you turn the steering back to the center position or turn off the turn signal, the cornering lights will automatically switch off.
Automatic High Beams
Automatic high beams brighten and dim automatically without any adjustment needed from the driver. They contain sensors that detect the lights from other vehicles, whether it's the taillights on the vehicle in front of you or headlights from oncoming cars. When they sense these lights, they dim to keep from blinding other drivers. When the roads are clear, your BMW's automatic high beams will brighten to give you more light when you need it.
Fully Adaptive LED Headlights
Fully adaptive LED headlights contain various sensors for detecting curves, corners, and oncoming traffic. They can also adjust according to how fast your BMW is traveling or in response to road and traffic conditions.
How To Choose BMW Adaptive LED Headlights
Whether you're considering purchasing a BMW that comes standard with adaptive LED headlights or you're adding them to your BMW aftermarket, there are some factors to consider. These include:
- Cost - Models equipped with adaptive LED headlights tend to cost more than models that come with conventional lighting. However, you might find the additional cost worth it, because these BMW models have many additional comfort and convenience features. If you add adaptive LED headlights to your BMW aftermarket, it can end up costing you thousands of dollars, especially if you have to purchase a conversion kit.
- Your BMW Model - If you're purchasing aftermarket adaptive BMW LED headlights, make sure they are correct type for your BMW model.
- Driving Needs - If you don't typically drive on curvy or winding rows, you might just need automatic high beams instead of fully adaptive lights.
How To Replace/Install BMW Adaptive LED Headlights
Disclaimer: The guidelines in this story are general and not meant to replace instructions for your specific vehicle. Please consult your owner's manual or repair guide before attempting repairs.
Once you've decided on the right set of BMW Adaptive LED headlights, you'll need to install them.
Remove Your BMW's Bumper Cover
You'll need a flathead screwdriver and a socket wrench to remove the bumper cover so that you can access the anchor points where the headlight assemblies are bolted on. Your owner's manual should indicate the best way to remove the bumper cover for your particular BMW model.
Unbolt the Current Headlight Assembly
Depending on your BMW model, you might need to remove the car's front grille section. Once you've removed any components that are blocking access to the headlight assembly, you'll need to unbolt the assembly. You usually only need a flathead screwdriver and socket wrench to accomplish this task. After you unbolt the assembly, you'll need to gently slide the assembly away from your BMW. Keep in mind that it's attached to electrical wiring that you don't want to damage.
Disconnect the Electrical Wiring
After you have the headlight assembly in a position where you can get a full view of the electrical wiring, you'll need to unhook all of the connectors. You can usually unhook them by gently squeezing on the edges or pulling a tab. If the connectors have locking clips, you can consult your owner's manual to see how to remove them.
Connect the Adaptive LED Headlights
If you're upgrading from conventional lights to adaptive LED headlights, you'll notice extra wires on your new lights. You should consult your owner's manual to see which connectors these wires should plug into. Figure out which wires go where, use a wire stripper to remove an inch of insulation from each wire end. Then you can connect the "power" wire to the light circuit and the "ground" wire to any available ground point.
Test the New Lights
Before you bolt the assembly back into place, you'll need to test the lights to make sure they're working and that they are aimed in the right direction. If everything is working correctly, you can tighten the assembly bolts and put back all of the other components in reverse order from how you removed them.
If you're unsure about installing the lights yourself, you can always hire a professional. Keep in mind, that this will add to the cost.
